Redundancy is such a difficult time for anyone. The time and effort put into to making a positive difference to customers, colleagues and suppliers seems to come to nothing. Training courses seem irrelevant, with all the other financial concerns and worries in the mix also, the future can seem very uncertain.

Being unemployed is not the same as being unemployable. The skills learned as a manager can be used again to help get back into employment. The first thing you need is help.

CV Writing

Once you have decided where to focus your efforts you will undoubtedly need a CV. If you have been involved in recruiting people previously you will have an idea of what a good CV looks like, but putting your own career down on paper is always a different matter.

The first thing to realise is that your CV is selling document. It needs to put a persuasive case to any potential employer so they invite you for an interview. For every employment application modify your CV and covering letter to reflect your skills against the job specification. If you found out about the role via word of mouth, make a point of getting as much information about the role to hone your CV further

Keep your CV as brief and to the point, but don’t sell yourself short. There are no definitive rules for CV length, but try and keep it to no more than three pages.

To highlight career accomplishments use bullet points, this keeps the reader’s interest allowing them to find out more about you.

Do proof read your CV. Ask friends to read over it and offer constructive criticism, don’t rely 100% on a spell checker. They are great inventions, but tend to use American spellings; you may also have spelt a word which is perfectly valid but not apt in your CV.
