THE CHANGING WORLD OF WORK

Whilst the methods by which people apply for, obtain and develop their careers and jobs have altered, it is the employers' perception of applicants that has greatly changed.

It is the individuals particular set of skills that attracts prospective employers and it is how he or she markets and sells their talents that will determine their level of future success. In many ways the individual needs to become more like a company offering his or her skills in the market place and seeking a return for such services.

• Job satisfaction is considered not only in terms of interest but also job role and description; status, position and responsibility; working conditions and environment; flexible working hours; working from home; travel opportunities.
• Job security/protection is sought in terms of various pre-work contractual agreements.
• Future prospects are now viewed in terms not only of promotional opportunities but also career development; professional training courses; educational development through day release and secondments; new skills acquisition (eg PC literacy, Internet knowledge).
